New Work – Dark Light Series

Over the past couple of months I have started another long-term photographic project: Dark Light Series. As with the Urban Contrasts Series, there is currently no defined end-point for the project and as with that series, I will occasionally cull a photograph from the project if I no longer feel it is up to standard or fits within the framework of the project. The aim is to simply build a body of work utilizing and developing certain themes and compositional techniques that have interested me for some time.

You will certainly notice some cross-over with the architecturally-based Urban Contrasts Series but my focus here is landscape-based with the emphasis on the use of negative space and simplicity of composition. The task I set myself is to concentrate on the bare essentials, developing the series in black and white and composing the elements within a square frame format. The challenge is to determine what to leave out of the compositional frame. Essentially, my intent in the making of each photograph is to convey an overall sense of calm, even if a single element within the composition itself is dramatic. As always, locations and the right weather conditions are hard to align, so progress may be slow.

As always, thank you for taking the time to read my blog and view my work and I hope that you will enjoy some of the new photographs I will be creating as part of this series. Comments and questions are always welcome in the comments section below and I will always try my best to respond as soon as possible.

Until next time,

Frank
